Valerie Gravelle

I was born in Toronto but moved away 25 years ago to take care of my aging mother. I am a mother of two sons, a grandmother to three granddaughters and two grandsons, a dog mommy of three and a cat mommy to one. During the early stages of my disease, I worked as an accountant. I took great pride in helping my clients with their tax obligations. I still help people with their taxes, but I am finding it more difficult as my disease progresses. I have had to give up many activities I used to enjoy because of my kidney disease. I have been an animal welfare activist and environmentalist my entire life but I am no longer able to actively participate.

 

I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease 18 years ago as the result of high blood pressure during my second pregnancy. I have never drunk alcohol, smoked or done drugs. I have end-stage kidney failure, and I have been advised by my nephrologist that a live kidney donor is my best option for my disease. According to my blood type, I need a donor with blood types B or O. It is difficult for me to do simple things like housework since I do not have the energy. The kidney disease impacts my sleep requiring me to take naps during the day. My energy level is very low making it difficult for me to participate in normal activities such as spending time with my grandchildren or taking my dogs for walks. Now I am turning to you to help me find a life-saving match. I have so much life still to live, not just for me, but for my family. I want to be there for life’s events and to contribute to the world the best way I can. Thank you.
